Teeny Tiny Turtle
Posted by Lacy in On the Farm on Thursday, June 18, 2009
I was walking in the hen house the other day with Levi because we were going to clean the roost, and I noticed this small yellow thing plastered to the floor. The hens have been sitting on this nest of eggs for a couple weeks now, so I recognized the shape, form, and what it was. A dead chick. The very first chick to be born in the hen house by hens sitting on a next, and it was dead.
I was terribly disappointed, so I thought up this idea to move the hen into the turkey building (brooder house) with food & water and her nest of eggs, so she'd be undisturbed by the other hens and if the eggs did hatch, they wouldn't been in danger of falling from the nest to the floor. So, I followed through and took her over, and – bad hen – she never ever sat on the nest. She apparently didn't like her new surroundings, and showed that by sitting on the roost instead of her nest.
After a while I had to move her back to the hen house, and now there's several different hens getting to sit on the nest at different times. I hope there wasn't just one good egg and the rest of them duds! But, just in case, I'm keeping a closer watch on them.
This (2nd picture) is a really, really tiny turtle that I saw one day floating in the barnyard pond. You can see how small he is by the size of the leaf floating beside him!
I believe he is an Eastern Painted Turtle, because we caught a large sized version that looked like him last year.
Gabriel didn't really know I was taking that picture of him, because his mind, at the time, was on frogs.
He was actually barking because when he shows up all the frogs dive under (and generally with loud splashes) and it makes Gabe mad because he wants to catch one!
I don't know how often I'll be able to post in the coming week (after Monday) due to the fact that Levi & I will be heading up to visit with our grandparents for a week (which means the only internet we'll have is [10hrs of] dialup!).
We're taking the camera though, so I'm sure we'll have tons of pictures by the time we get back, especially since Levi & I both like to take pictures!
I reckon I'll see ya'll when I get back!
Arefay eyay ellway!
Egg Basket Carrier
Posted by Lacy in On the Farm on Tuesday, April 7, 2009
I just had to get a photo of Gabriel doing his favorite job ~ carrying my little egg basket down to the Hen House for me.
He is so cute!
He just loves to carry "his" basket down to the Hen House, and then when we get there he'll set it down on the ground or "drop" it in my hand for me. Such an eager little helper he is!
I'm happy to report that Puffer's eye is well again, and he has been released from the "hospital / nursing home" dog pen and is back with the rest of the turkeys! I was afraid that Puffer & Stomper would go right back to fighting (which I'm sure they will, eventually…) but all went well and he was accepted back without any complications!
My dear little Sammy Allen is now in the same predicament as Jesse – he fought with Blackfeet and lost, and is now in disgrace. I've had to put him in the Hen Pen (along with Jesse) and the poor little dear is so distressed. He spent most of the day sitting on the Turkey Building slats (as you can see from the first picture) with Adam, and I didn't even put him in there, all I had to do was leave the door opened and they both climbed in there themselves.
Adam and Sam are pals no matter what, so Adam kept Sammy company today. (First picture – Adam's on the left, Sam on the right)
Both of the roosters (Danny & Jacob) are in the Rooster Pen with the rest of the guineas, and I'll have to keep them away from the hens for a couple of days, because between both of them they're tearing the feathers off the hen's backs and making them raw. They are not so thrilled at the idea of spending a couple nights with the guineas!
hehe
The Doggy Hospital & Duck-Sized Egg
Posted by Lacy in Capturing Life in Photos, On the Farm on Friday, March 20, 2009
Gabriel now gets to sleep in Mom's bathroom with all the comforts of home ~ carpet squares on the floor, his comfortable pad and stuffed animals. We call it the "Doggy Hospital"! Remember that nice new bandage Gabriel got when we went to the vet on Wednesday? Well, it didn't last very long!
Last night, Mom and I were taking Gabriel's sock off of his bandage (Mom had sewn plastic on the bottom of the sock to keep the wetness out, and it worked great) and, while pulling the sock off, the bandage got pulled off with it. Oops!
So, we [nervously] wrapped it back up.. This morning, it it fell off while Gabe was walking, so we got to re-wrap it again.
This time, though, we did a better job and so far it has stayed on!
Now we were rather wary of using the sock again, since we didn't want to pull his newly re-wrapped bandage off again, so we had to come up with a better idea… A shoe!
Mom found instructions somewhere on the internet and followed them and we made him a ducktape (with fabric inside) shoe… complete with shoelaces (from my shoe, of course)!
It works wonderfully, ties on nicely, and Gabriel even likes it!
Or else, he likes the sound of it hitting the ground when he walks!
I don't think words are necessary to describe the gigantic-ness of that very large white egg I found in the hen house this evening! That thing is literally the size of a duck egg, and won't fit in any of our egg cartons!
It's HUGE!
Cleaning Hen House, Goose Beak
Posted by Lacy in Capturing Life in Photos, On the Farm on Wednesday, December 10, 2008
Today was actually a really nice day outside! It was warm enough that I didn't even need a coat! Since it is supposed to rain sometime soon, I decided to clean off the chicken roost inside the hen house, put fresh woodchips down inside and get it smelling a bit better, LOL. I had the windows open to help … move the air around.
Levi took me out to see the dead geese, and he posted a picture of one of them on his blog, so I won't post one here since I don't want to gross anyone out….
I wanted to see the one that still had its head attached, and I was kind of curious since I'd never seen the inside of a goose beak before. Well, I pried his beak open and found that the top and bottom is lined with tiny little needle like teeth (at least, that's what it looked like to me!). No wonder I was always told not to mess with geese!
I took a couple pictures of the ice crystals last time we got a snow drift, I picked out two of the best ones. I was going to get some more, but Gabriel kept following me and stepping on them whenever I wanted to take one!
Yes, that is the ornery little puppy that wouldn't let me be. Why? Because he wanted me to toss his stuffed dog out in the yard!!
