Woodson's Mill

I meant to post about this the yesterday, but I never got around to it, since we went to town (Tractor Supply) yesterday.. The other day, Levi and I went on a long, long, bike ride. It was a nice day, beautiful outside, so we thought we'd take a bike ride. We really didn't know where we were heading (hehe), and didn't really intend to go far, so we didn't even take any water bottles with us (big mistake!).

We ended up riding to a place called Woodson's Mill, and it took us an hour (on bike) to get there. It's probably a really good thing that I wasn't wore out by the time we got there, because it took us another whole hour to get back (if not a bit more, because we were going slower on the way back)! Which wouldn't have been so bad, if the roads weren't hilly, and if we would've had some water. :P We'd never went that far before, nor have we been there on bike before, so it was definitely an interesting trip! I enjoyed it, but I probably won't be doing it again. :P

Here's what it looked like, the mill, that is. :)

Like I mentioned above, we went to Tractor Supply yesterday, and got some fencing so we can fence in the front yard for Gracie, and I was able to get a pair of shoes (I absolutely dislike shoe-shopping, but I made myself because the soles on my other pair are falling apart :P ). It was so nice outside yesterday — up in the 70's, I think! Dad got the garden rotivated with the tractor after milking, and I was out looking for something to take a picture of (there isn't much yet — I'm waiting for everything to green up again!). With it being so warm out, who would want to stay inside? Not me! :D

We've been trying to get some of the leaves in the field and barnyard raked up so the grass will grow. By this time last year, we already had all the leaves up! But with all the snow we had this year, we weren't able to do that. The barnyard is soo wet and muddy under all the leaves — you rake the leaves back and you have puddles lying everywhere! The middle part of the field is mostly raked up, and we managed to get the heavy, wet leaves taken away with the new cart Mom and Dad bought (I'll have to get a picture of it). That works so much better than using a tarp — especially when the leaves are so heavy that we can't even hardly lift the tarp!

This is how Hannah naps.. Isn't she funny? Samuel (my guinea there on the right), was in a fight the other day with Jesse (another guinea male) and obviously he lost the fight. Jesse was picking on him terribly, so I had to separate him and put him in the hen pen for a while, till everything calmed down a bit. Though Jesse is still chasing him around, he's not pecking him as bad. Now everyone's (especially Big Guin [the old male guinea]) is chasing Blackfeet! LOL! :P

The departure of Megan, braces, and a snake

We had a great time with Megan while she was here! :) We made a quick trip to WV Tuesday, spent the night at my grandparent's, and gave Megan back to her mom on Wednesday morning. I think we took about 1,054 pictures while she was here (and then she took some too!).

We went bike riding, took walks in the woods, fished for frogs in the pond, took lots of pictures ( :D ), and even did some singing while she was here, with Levi's room set up as the sound studio (even had 4 microphones set up!). Levi has them all (the music tracks) uploaded on his new Music page, if you want to listen to any of them. :)

Right now we've only done 2 or 3 hymns and the rest are Scripture songs. I like The Love of Jesus, Come Bless the Lord, and Let love be the best so far! :D Of course, I like all the other ones too, but those are just my favorites!  You can go check out the rest of them on Levi's Music Page!

1st picture is one of Megan, me, and Levi, the 2nd picture is Mom and Megan's mom, Kelly. And the 3rd is Megan waving goodbye!

Today I had to go back to the dentist to pick up my new braces. I don't think I posted about it, but they had to take new impressions of my teeth for new braces, since the braces weren't grabbing a tooth properly and stuff. So, whereas I was on set number 22 of 25 (nearly done..), I'm now on set #1 of 21 for my upper teeth and set #1 of 11 for my bottom teeth. It'll be a couple more months now before I get close to finishing it them up again. And I was almost there, too! :( Oh well.

Today while I was up at the top of the field, I had noticed the guineas standing / walking around in a circle on the left side of the log pile, so I walked over there to see what it was they were looking at, and there sat a black snake right in the middle of them, curled up in a ball and hissing at them. :D I thought it was a rather funny sight! The guineas didn't seem to know what it was, so they were walking around it in a circle, just clucking and staring at it.

I grabbed a stick real quick and scared it away before one of them got the idea to get closer because of their curiosity. After I scared it away and starting walking back down the field, the guineas seemed to know all the fun was over and followed me on down. Silly things!

Battle Wound

Riding your bike is so enjoyable in this type of warm weather! :) Except for the fact that I need to do it more now, since I get winded far too easily from lack of practice! Levi and I raced today and of course, he won. :P

puffer_face

This is the left side of one of our male turkey's face… Puffer, to be exact. I noticed it yesterday while I was in the barnyard by the pond, and when I got close to his left side he didn't move (due to his eye being closed, he can't see out of it).

stomperApparently both our male turkeys are going into their "fighting" season again, and, as always, Puffer obviously lost the fight.  Stomper here (on the right) was the victor of this fight. Notice that really long extra sharp beak he's got? Well, I reckon he sure knows how to use it!

So, Puffer spent last night in the Rooster Pen with the guineas, because right now we can't put him back in the turkey pen with Stomper, especially with him only having one eye, Stomper might really take advantage of the situation! I guess he'll be spending a lot of nights in the Rooster Pen until his battle wounds heal.

ducks-in-pond lighty_jack

This is Jack and Light-bill in the halfway enlarged pond in the barnyard. You can tell which one's Jack in the 2nd picture because he's so much bigger than Lighty. They absolutely love all the water they can play in now, and more than that they are thoroughly enjoying each other's company. Jack has actually been behaving (let's just hope he keeps behaving, right?) and doing really well, and even his leg is finally improving!

sammy-allen

And of course I couldn't resist taking a picture.. or rather.. trying to take a picture, of my adorable little Sammy Allen. He's my little barnyard companion and escort. :) I thought I'd get my camera out today and see if there was anything interesting to take pictures of.. I only ended up taking 50 (which are basically a lot of pictures of the same things!) but I won't bore you to death by posting them all. :P

Doreen's Jewel Box – Chapter 2

I figured everyone is probably curious as to what Doreen gets for her 10th birthday.. (If you haven't read Chapter 1 – Five Minutes to Ten, I recommend reading that first!) so here's the 2nd chapter! :)

Doreen's Jewel Box

Chapter 2 — Ten O'Clock

Doreen pushed down the bedclothes, sat up, and rubbed her eyes. It was still quite dark, but she was awake enough to know that the great morning for which she had been longing so much had come at last.
She peered around the room. There was no bicycle and no doll's house. "Downstairs, perhaps," she said to herself.
She put out her hand and felt for the chair beside her bed. Ah, what was this? A flat, brown paper package tied up with a string. She drew it into bed, her heart beating faster at every rustle of the brown paper.

Lying down again, Doreen decided to enjoy the "feel" of the parcel until it should be light enough to open it. Meanwhile she tried to imagine what might be inside.

She felt sure it must be the long-desired jewel box. It was just the right size and shape. She pictured a very handsome case filled with sparkling diamonds and emeralds and gleaming jewels of many shapes and colors. Shaking the parcel, she expected to hear the stones rattle together. But there was no sound. "Of course," she said to herself, "how stupid I am! If they are beautiful stones they will be wrapped up in tissue paper, or set in golden rings on velvet cushions."
Morning dawned at last. Jumping up, Doreen put on her clothes, with one eye all the time on the brown-paper parcel. She had decided to keep the pleasure of opening it until she went downstairs.
Dressed at last, she went down to the dining room. There was no cycle nor doll's house there. Evidently mamma had spent all her money on the jewel box, thought Doreen.

Snip! snip! went the scissors, and off fell the string and the first sheet of brown paper. There was some writing on the next piece of wrapping paper. Doreen's eyes opened wider than ever as she read the words:

"DOREEN'S JEWEL BOX"

"Hurrah!" she shouted, hastily tearing off the next sheet of paper. Underneath was a beautiful cardboard box of a mottled green color. "How pretty!" she exclaimed, slowing and very carefully lifting the lid. She peeped inside.
Then something happened.
"Oh!" cried Doreen, stamping her little foot and flinging the box across the room. "It's not a jewel box! It's not a jewel box!"
Crash! went a flowerpot from the window sill.

"Whatever is the matter?" cried mamma, running into the room.
"It's not a jewel box! It's not a jewel box!" sobbed Doreen, "and you said it was a jewel box. It isn't. It's just a horrid, nasty, ugly old book, and I don't like books, and I don't want a book — and you said it was a jewel box, and it isn't, and–and—-"
"Now, come, come, Doreen," said mamma. "You mustn't take on like this. You must have got out of bed on the wrong side this morning, and on your birthday, too!"
"But you said I should have a jewel box —–"
"And we have given you one," said mamma.
"You haven't; it's only a nasty, horrid, ugly old book!"
"No, no, Doreen. Have you look inside it yet?"
"No."

"Then you have cried too soon. You will find that it is a most beautiful jewel box, packed full of the richest gems."
Doreen began to dry her tears.
"Daddy and I," said mamma, "have spent lots of money on this jewel box, and if you look after it, you will have it all of your life. It is very beautifully and very strongly made, and when you are an old, old lady, if time should last that long, you will still be telling people about the lovely jewel box you were given on your tenth birthday."
"But where are all the jewels?" asked Doreen.
"You must go and look for them," said mother. "I will help you find some of them later on."
Doreen's curiosity was aroused, and she walked across the room to pick up the mottled green box.

"I'm sorry I knocked your plant over, Mamma," she said.
"Yes, that is too bad," said mamma, "but I will sweep up the mess this time if you will start looking for those jewels."
Picking up the box, Doreen kissed mamma and went upstairs to her room.
