Photo Editing
Posted by Lacy in Capturing Life in Photos on Wednesday, May 19, 2010
GIMP is pretty useful for editing photography — I normally never fiddle with editing my photos much, normally because I like to see how good I can get the photo without editing, but lately I've been just bumping up the brightness and contrast, and occasionally messing with the (color) levels of the photo. Take these below here, for an example. The one on the left is the original, the one on the right is the one I edited. I like the edited one a lot better.
With the one on the left, the original, there's too much "head room", so to speak. I fixed this by cropping the portrait. That also took the focus away from the busy background and put it more on the subject. I also bumped up the brightness and contrast and fiddled with the color levels a bit to improve the coloring of the portrait, AND I sharpened it a bit. As a "finishing touch", I added that little white border around the photo.
What do you think? Which one do you like better?
Another thing I like to do with some of my photos is make them look old style with black&white, or sepia toning.. For example:
This particular picture of Gracie just looked a lot better in b&w (black and white) than it did in color — to me it just looked bland in color, so I did a couple edits, bumped up the contrast & brightness, and converted it to B&W. Mom says she looks like an albino or a ghost cow since I converted it.
As for the barn, I wanted to try to achieve and "old" look to it, as if it were an old picture of an old barn. I think it turned out pretty good with the sepia coloring. Your thoughts?

Now wash me and I shall be

Yep, sure enough, we got snow again. Dad figures there's about 12-14 inches out there right now. It's pretty much stopped snowing now, but it was really coming down thick earlier!
Most of the day was spent shoveling / sweeping snow paths to the animal pens and barns… then coming out later to find they were completely filled back in with snow (didn't even look like paths had been cleared to the animal pens), so we had to re-shovel them a lot!
All these pictures were taken while it was still snowing (I wrapped my camera up in a handkerchief to get it down to the barn, so it wouldn't get snowed on
), so hopefully tomorrow if it's not snowing I'll be able to get some better ones!
Seeing all of this snow reminds me of Psalm 51:7: "Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow." and of course that reminds me of the hymn that goes with that verse (Whiter than Snow)……..
Lord Jesus, I long to be perfectly whole; I want Thee forever to live in my soul; Break down every idol, cast out every foe!
Now wash me and I shall be whiter than snow. Whiter than snow, yes, whiter than snow; Now wash me and I shall be whiter than snow!

After supper, we all went outside to check on Gracie and the goats, and the wood-stove in the barn (and for me to collect the eggs, which I had forgotten earlier), I went around to the rooster (guinea) pen to check on the guineas, since it was supposed to be pretty cold tonight.. Well, about 5 of them were in the guinea box (and a few sitting outside of the box), and 6 of them were outside on the roost.
So, the ones that were sitting outside the guinea box, I picked up and moved to the inside, then walked down to get the 6 off the roost and put them in as well. One of the girls, Sydney, wasn't even on the roost. She was sitting on the ground, in the snow, sleeping! Considering that the big light was on, I didn't think I was going to be able to catch them and move them to the guinea box, but my little pearls are generally pretty easy going, the only ones I had to worry about catching were the two older guineas. I managed to catch the pearls, one by one, then moved on to catching the older ones.
Big Guin (the old male guinea) didn't give me any trouble. I slowly walked up and grabbed him real fast, so he wouldn't have a chance to fly. Well, once I did that, Miss Guin (the old female) was on the alert, and she wasn't about to let me catch her easy. Going back for her, when I tried to grab her she flew, so I had to herd her back to the roost and make her fly up again, and actually caught her that time. But when I did, the way she was screaming you'd of thought I was killing her!
Even the cow came out of her stall to see what was going on.. LOL!
I was getting "camera happy"
. The doll is an Indian doll that Gran got me for my birthday years ago.

The Same Yesterday

Brr, it has been cold out today! It's soo nice to have a warm wood-stove fire in the barn though, to be able to go there and warm up!
Gabriel and Sunny are enjoying the heat too, I think. It's a lot better to be in there than to be outside where it's so cold with the wind blowing!
Megan and I were examining my braces / aligners earlier today, checking out the very first set I ever had and comparing them with the set I have in now.. and my, what a difference! It's kind of weird to see what my teeth looked like before, by looking at little plastic molds of them.
In cold weather I kind of like having my braces, as it shields my (sensitive) teeth from the cold wind and air!
Oh, I finished reading Worth Dying For.. I thought it was a good book, though I didn't agree with the numerous references to a "sinful nature", otherwise it was a very good book to read. Next book to read on my list is Deliver the Ransom Alone by Verda J. Glick.
I thought ya'll might enjoy getting to see one of my new Scripture wallpapers. Since I've had TWF, I don't seem to post them here as much.
I'll try to do that more often. Oh yes, and if anyone wants a custom wallpaper or blog tag done, please do request it. I enjoy doing requests!

Recap of 2009
Posted by Lacy in A Godly Maiden on Friday, January 1, 2010
Is it really true that today is the first day of 2010? Indeed, it seems not too long ago since last year began, and now it has flown by already and a new year has begun. It seems impossible that yesterday was actually the last day of 2009!
I wondered and wondered what I could post for the beginning of the new year, and decided to post one photo from each month to recap/review the year. Enjoy!
By the way, does anyone realize how hard that was for me, to just pick ONE photo from each month?
(In order, from January to December)
In the year that now is before us, I pray that we all would seek the Lord more earnestly, draw closer to Him and strive daily to become more like Christ. I pray that those who call themselves "Christians" would come to realize the truth of what is taught in God's Word, and not be deceived by false teachers, preachers, pastors, or prophets. Oh, that they would turn from their sins and follow Christ with their whole heart, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts! Let all who name the name of Christ depart from iniquity.
May those who are truly following Christ be faithful, stedfast, unwavering. Let us constantly seek His face and His will, studying His Word to shew ourselves approved, rightly dividing the word of truth, and obeying the truth without hesitation, choosing like Moses, to suffer with the people of God, rather than enjoying the pleasures of sin for a season.
Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: (Isaiah 55:6)
Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. (James 4:8a)
In conclusion, allow me to leave you with some quotes to ponder on…
The Bible no longer has a lawful places in most of our schools and colleges; family prayer is generally a lost habit; our Lord Jesus Christ, God's only begotten and well-beloved Son, is discredited and dishonored in the house of His professed friends; corporate testimony on earth is over; the call to Laodicea to repent unheeded; and our Lord's promise of communion with Him is now to the individual. — Richard L. Roberts
Only those who are thus earnestly following Christ are worthy to be called Christians. – Mabel Hale
'August Emperor,' Macer cried, 'I am a Christian. I will fight wild beasts, but I will not raise my hand against a fellow man. I can die, but I will not kill.' — from The Martyr of the Catacombs
We chose His cross deliberately, and together. It is His cause. As He died for us, so we must be prepared to die for Him. His grace is our only strength and His promise our hope. – Margareta Sattler
Those are without faith who have not ceased from sin. — Michael Sattler
Are the things you are living for worth Christ dying for? — Leonard Ravenhill
We ought to be willing to live our lives, and if necessary, give our lives, in His service. If our faith is not worth dying for, it is not worth living for. – Worth Dying For

Barn Painting
Posted by Lacy in On the Farm on Sunday, November 29, 2009
Well, we've got most of the barn painted again.. I think we only have one side left to do. Dad built a "double dutch door" (I think that's what it's called) for the run-in stall, the k ind of door where you can open the top and have the bottom still closed, know what I mean? If not, this picture ought to give it away.
Of course, this was a picture that was taken before it got painted, so imagine it red like the rest of the barn now! Now that everything is all painted and all, maybe tomorrow I can get my camera out and get some updated pictures of everything!
I got to do [most] of the trim work and around the edges while we were painting.
I kinda like painting, outside at least, it's fun! Well, it's fun when it's not chilly out, otherwise my fingers get ice cold! It's a good thing I wore some old clothes, because I got speckled with red paint!
Gabriel just absolutely hates getting his picture taken. He'll deliberately look elsewhere whenever I point the camera in his general direction, which can be used as an advantage for some pictures. For instance, I think this side picture of him looks much nicer than a straight-on shot would be.
And Sunny.. He just decided to curl up in a 5 gallon bucket that was half full of hay and soak up some sun. He's turning into a very good barn cat, staying around, occasionally chasing guineas (hehe) and playing down by the creek.

My Sunshine

There I go again, keeping you all waiting for weeks at a time before I update!
I do apologize for that – it wasn't intentional! Every time I sat down to post I got a touch of that famous "blogger's block" and couldn't think of anything to write. Well, this morning I decided to write something even if it wasn't too exciting, at least ya'll would know I'm still here.. LOL!
As you can see, we've gotten a LOT of progress done on the barn since my last post. Got the siding up, stalls are getting completed, and got the barn painted (more painted than the picture above shows.. I haven't gotten a new far away picture yet, that one was from a couple days ago I think).
I think that color is a very pretty, almost rustic red. Not nearly as bright a red as our other buildings are painted in, I think they were done in something called "polished apple".
As you can probably tell from the pictures above, Megan is still here with us, and should probably be here till the end of October (Yay!).
We've already went on a bike ride out to the Bumpass Park (the flower pictures were taken on the way home) and taken a walk through the woods, and at the end of that walk we had to rush home because … … you should be able to guess the answer.
We must've managed to walk through a patch of seedticks!
They didn't attach on anyone else but me, and I've got at least 25 bites around my right ankle.
And they sure do itch! LOL! We did get to see something exciting though when we took that walk, something we've never got to see before. ^^ It's up above on the bottom row of the pictures between the daisies and the thistle. Baby raccoons! Two of them, at that!
A couple of days ago we had to put down three of our pets / animals. Light-bill (our oldest duck), Jack (our male duck), and Tiny (the half-blind guinea girl, that was now completely blind in one eye 'cause something must've pecked her in it). That was sad, but at least they are no longer suffering here.
You probably remember in my last post that I said my Aunt Mel was going to be coming down soon and bringing us a cat.
Well, she did so last week.. as a matter a fact it was this day last week, I believe! And she did bring us our cat, and I just finally got a couple good pictures of him yesterday. He absolutely loves it outside. Right now we are keeping him in the barn until he gets used to the place and everything (not that I think he'd run off too far, but a running cat is kind of hard to chase down!), but he already knows how to push the barn door open, so we have to keep the latch over the door while he's in there!
There's my little kitty!
We had a terrible time thinking of a name for him. Levi, Megan, and I were leaning toward either Theodore or Alfred (so we could call him either Teddy or Alfy, lol), but neither Mom or Dad liked that, so we eventually decided on Sunshine… and we get to call him Sunny for short!
Which I think is kind of funny, since our last cat was named Stormy.. and now we have Sunny!
And, to top it all off, Megan has shared some exciting news over at her blog, which some of you may have already heard about. But if you haven't, I'm going to keep you in suspense until you go read Megan's post!
