Guineas and Gabriel's Walks

Levi has been practicing with Mom's camera lately, and discovering tons of different things that I never knew you could do with a camera that makes pictures better..or worse (shutter speed, etc) It's really neat! I haven't figured it all out yet, but I'll ask him to show me. :)

The guineas have been behaving so nicely lately! I've had them out for several hours at a time, and they just stay right around the hen pen, up the fence line, or just right around. If the hens are out, they normally stay in the hen pen where there's food!
I noticed yesterday and today they have been practicing their flying skills by flying up on top the hen house! There were several of them just sitting up there today, enjoying their 'new view'!

I managed to get a pretty good picture of Blackfeet (left) and Adam (right). Except at that moment, Adam had to blink. Notice the funny looking eye. :)

I was getting pecked right and left while I was down there with them today! My skirt has three buttons on both sides, and for some reason these little fellows are obsessed with pecking my buttons. It's terrible — they've got them so loose they're about to come off!!

The Pilgrim Sisters Fellowship is coming along very nice, thanks to all the many sisters who have joined! :) We had a rather heated discussion with another young lady recently over "Is Hair the Covering?" study that I did, but I think it's simmered down now. ;)

"A sister in Christ Jesus" has changed her views on the headcovering, praise God! Sister, you defied the devil and all his demons with that comment! (Anyone else notice the comment number is [was] 666? Levi pointed that out!)

We've been using that containment system that we got for Gabriel — It's got a remote too, so right now we're using that to train him. We haven't got the wire installed yet, but hopefully before too long it will be! :)

We've actually taken him for walks down the road, without a leash. Can you imagine? But he behaves so nicely! He actually walks better without a leash than with one!

While we were walking him the other day, I caught sight of a beautiful morning glory flower in our neighbor's front yard (right by the road) and Levi went over and got a picture of it for me. It was absolutely huge, the biggest one I had ever seen!

But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

Hard to get a good picture of guineas–they're always moving so much! Last week we decided we were sure: our 7 guineas were 6 females and one male. So we thought maybe we'll get some babies next spring? Tuesday came home and a hawk was there and the one male was dead. I am so upset. Going to build them a covered run this weekend I hope.

Aww, I'm sorry to hear that! Are you sure there was only one male, though? I understand how you feel — I remember when my little pet rooster, Orin, got killed by whatever that thing was that got into their pen. :(
We have a good many hawks around here, but none of them have ever gotten any of our animals. When the chickens were little, I did make sure not to leave them out unsupervised until they got pretty big. The little guineas are very alert though, they run for cover if they see a buzzard!!

Well, those wattle things they have–the 6 remaining have pretty small ones; the one's who died were at least 3 times the size. Really markedly different looking. All we can think is he was protecting and defending his flock. The 3 silkies, duck and pheasant may not have been as quick as the guineas? They of course have access to the coop and several other covered areas, including a trampoline only a few feet from where he was found, and our dog was in the yard with them. She thinks of these birds as her pack, (that's the outdoor pack-inside it's the cats!–kind of funny isn't it) but she is such a gentle dog…tends to stand a ways off and just bark. I'm just glad I only have to know he's dead. My husband has really been bothered with the sight he saw when he found him, but he took care of things before I saw.
